Crafting materials are more than just magical metal and glowing rocks — they’re an opportunity to enrich your setting, hint at forgotten lore, and give your players exciting loot beyond gold and gear. Whether you're running a gritty low-magic campaign or a high-fantasy epic, custom materials can make the world feel alive and unpredictable.
Here’s how to design fantasy crafting materials that are flavorful, balanced, and memorable.
Every good material begins with a core concept. Ask yourself:
Liosite – A golden crystal formed where celestial beings have fallen. It glows faintly with divine energy and grants resistance to fear and charm when used in armor.
Go beyond "it's shiny." Let the player feel the material through description:
Verdant Glass – Translucent green with black veins that pulse in response to necrotic energy. Cold to the touch even in fire.
Make the source of the material part of the narrative:
These origins can create story hooks for quests, NPCs, or lost knowledge.
Keep materials balanced but tempting. Good mechanics include:
Always consider both weapon and armor use cases.
Magical materials can come with a price. Curses, mental strain, or side effects from prolonged use make them feel mysterious and rare.
You want players to want it — and then chase it. Use rumors, old dwarven maps, or planar forges as plot devices to introduce these materials over time.
And remember: Not all rare materials must be epic-tier. Even low-CR materials can feel flavorful.
Not every material needs to be handcrafted from scratch. Tools like the Fantasy Material Generator (coming soon!) can give you a quick spark of inspiration — complete with names, descriptions, and mechanics — that you can tweak for your world.
